Queen Of Sports 101: NFL Playoffs
January 10th, 2011 | Posted by Queen of Sports in Football,Sports 101
This past weekend was the first set of NFL playoff games! There were four games which were part of the “Wild Card Round” where we saw the former Super Bowl Champions, the New Orleans Saints fall to the Seattle Seahawks, the New York Jets beat the Indianapolis Colts by one point, Michael Vick and the Philadelphia Eagles season cut short thanks to the Green Bay Packers, and the Baltimore Ravens beat the Kansas City Chiefs 30 – 7.
So this week we are going to talk about the NFL playoffs. In the NFL, each of the two conferences sends four division teams and two wild card teams to the playoffs. The first round of the playoffs is called the ” Wild Card Round” which we saw this past weekend. The division champions are exempted from play and are automatically granted a seat in the “Divisional Round” of playoffs.
In the “Divisional Round”, the worst seeded remaining team plays the #1 seeded team, while the best seeded remaining team that played in the wild card round play the #2 seed. Both the #1 seed and #2 seed have home-field advantage in the divisional round.
All the playoff games are single elimination, meaning if your team loses they are out! The NFL is the only major professional sports league in the US to use a this time of playoff format. Basketball, baseball and hockey all use a “best of” format. The highlight of the season is The Super Bowl, where the two top teams from each conference, who have survived the playoffs battle for the championship trophy.
The first round of divisional playoffs is this weekend. Here is the schedule:
Saturday, January 15th
Baltimore Ravens at Pittsburgh Steelers, 4:30PM (ET)
Green Bay Packers at Atlanta Falcons, 8:00PM (ET)
Sunday, January 16th
Seattle Seahawks at Chicago Bears, 1:00PM (ET)
New York Jets at New England Patriots, 4:30PM (ET)
Make sure to check out some of the games, they are going to be great!
