Queen Of Sports 101: Fantasy Football
August 16th, 2010 | Posted by Queen of Sports in Football,Sports 101
With preseason NFL games underway, this latest edition of Queen Of Sports 101 will tackle fantasy football! Your boyfriend, brother, work colleague, etc. are all gearing up for their fantasy football draft and you want to know what it’s all about right? We’re here to help!
Fantasy football game in which participants (called “owners”) are arranged into a competitive league, earning “fantasy points” by using the statistics of real NFL players. The owners of each league draft the NFL players filling out the roster with all the necessary offensive and defensive positions. Depending on how well those players do during the real-life game that week will determine how many fantasy points each owner earns. Fantasy points are pre-determined for various on-field achievements. If a running back scores a touchdown, the owner that has that player on their team will be rewarded with fantasy points.
At the end of the season, win-loss records determine league rankings or qualifications into a playoff bracket. Most leagues set aside the last weekends of the regular season for their own playoffs, which determines the league’s champion for that season.
There are two different types of competition formats that are played, head-to-head, with weekly games played against specific opponents (much like in the NFL), and total points, in which cumulative points during the season determine winners (or playoff teams).
Leagues can consist of anywhere from 4 to 20 teams. There are different types of rules for each league, some draft a whole new team every season, others play in a keeper league where they are able to retain a small amount of players from their previous season, or a dynasty league where owners can keep as many players as they want. Another type is the salary cap league adding another level of NFL realism to the game, just like in the NFL, this means each player has an associated salary and the total spent on all the players on a team has a maximum – the “salary cap.” This can have many levels of complexity, e.g. a player may be signed for multiple years, etc.
Queen Of Sports will be bringing you our own fantasy football team based on the hottest players in the coming weeks! But for more information on strategy for fantasy football you can check out a variety of online sources and they also have books on the subject!
Fantasy sports can also be played with college football (NCAA), NBA, NHL and MLB.
