UFC Fighter Chael Sonnen Pleads Guilty To Money Laundering Charges

Chael Sonnen, the UFC fighter who’s MMA career is on hold after testing positive to steroids, is now in some more trouble. This time, it’s not the UFC he’s in trouble with: it’s a federal matter that the IRS had to get in involved with. He pled guilty to money laundering related to mortgage fraud. The charges carry a maximum 20 years in prison and a $500,000 fine. The former real estate agent got off easy though: the court placed him on probation for two years and ordered him to pay a $10,000 fine.

The money laundering charges stemmed from a 2006 home sale. Sports Illustrated writer Jeff Wagenheim breaks it down in plain language for us, “A mortgage lender agreed to pay $69,000 to a plumbing company owned by Sonnen’s mother for repairs, and the work was never done, the money diverted to a straw homebuyer as a kickback.” Yikes, that’s some shady business dealings.
