Professional rugby star Gareth Thomas, the only openly gay rugby player and one of the most successful rugby players in the history of the sport, spoke out recently for the It Gets Better Project. Gareth came out in December of 2009, and since then has been a role model and inspiration to many in the gay community. The It Gets Better Project is a movement to raise awareness for LGBT teens that they are not alone and it DOES get better. Gareth speaks in the video to victims of bullying or abuse, reminding them that if they are honest and truthful about who they are, “it gets better.” Gareth’s incredible courage in coming out and speaking to others as a role model will hopefully change the lives of young LGBT teens and encourage others to come out.

2010 Commonwealth Games In Delhi, India

The largest multi-sport event to ever be held in India is currently underway in Delhi. Taking place from October 3-14, the Commonwealth Games feature members of the Commonwealth of Nations who participate, 71 nations in all. The opening ceremony opened up the event to a crowd of 60,000. Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, and his wife Camilla joined Indian President Prathiba Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh as the audience sang India’s national anthem. The Queen’s Baton relay, which began at Buckingham Palace in 2009 with a message from Queen Elizabeth II to the athletes,  arrived in India in June of this year after visiting 54 of the Commonwealth Nations. The baton is in and of itself an important feature of the games, with an embedded GPS feature, the ability to capture images and sounds, and LED lights that change color according to the country’s flag where it is. The baton also has text messaging capabilities so that congratulations can be sent to the baton bearer throughout the journey.

While the sports included in the game change year to year, this year the games feature 17 different sports. From sports popular in the West like boxing and swimming, to sports less popular in the West like rugby and netball, the Commonwealth Games bring together the members of the British Empire. Shrouded in controversies from reports of child labor at the game site, to the idea of hosting a multi-million dollar event in an impoverished country, the Commonwealth Games saw a lot of bad press in the planning stages. However, an opening ceremony that brought together the leaders of the main nations involved helped to improve the game’s image.

Ugliest Sports Uniform Ever?

French rugby club Stade Francais will be sporting these uniforms that feature caricatures of fans and the club’s owner, Max Guazzini. The uniform is mostly pink, the color Max Guazzini chose as the team’s official color more recently in order to look more gay friendly. The Adidas-branded shirt sells for just over $100, which is a lot for something that looks so cheesy. The team isn’t bad, despite their taste, they play in the top 14 group of French rugby clubs.
