Sports Date Of The Week: UFC 133

August 3rd, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in MMA,Sports Date of the Week | No Comments

This Saturday night, the UFC is hosting an event in Philadelphia. The card, even though it has been plagued with injuries and fighters having to pull out for various reasons, will be a good one to watch.

Light heavyweight Rashad Evans will take on Tito Ortiz. This is the main event on the card, and what looks to be the biggest draw for the UFC. Ortiz, who is 36 years old, has been fighting in the UFC since 1997. Ortiz was set to be cut loose from the UFC if he lost his fight against Ryan Bader at UFC 132. A quick first-round submission that earned “Submission of the Night” honors, however, earned the “Huntington Beach Bad Boy” another shot in the UFC.

Middleweights Vitor Belfort and Yoshihiro Akiyama will compete in what will most likely be a close, but entertaining battle. There will be three other fights on the main card on Pay-Per-View, as well as two free fights on the preliminary card that will air on Spike TV. The UFC is continuing to broadcast a round of preliminary fights on Facebook, also.

Chad Ochocinco Calls Out Georges St-Pierre

August 3rd, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Football,MMA | No Comments

While doing a photo shoot for MMA brand Tapout to promote their mouth guards and Real G wristbands, newly traded New England Patriot Chad Ochocinco called out UFC Champion Georges St-Pierre. He asked the crew who the best fighter is in the UFC right now, and when they reply, “Georges St-Pierre,” Ochocinco throws out some expletives. The PG version of what he said is, “I’d mess him up.” He further insults St-Pierre, saying, “I’m not going to lose to no [expletive] Canadian.”

Now that Ochocinco is playing with one of the best quarterbacks in the league, he can’t spend time to train for other sports, so he better watch out who he calls out. What if someone challenges him? Ochocinco isn’t one to deny a challenge or back down.

When Real Madrid came out to Los Angeles, UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez came out to support Cristiano Ronaldo, who he considers “the best player in soccer.”

Both Velasquez and Ronaldo are leaders in their respective sports. While soccer and mixed martial arts are two very different sports, both athletes admire the other’s sport. Ronaldo is a huge MMA and jiu-jistu fan. When they met, they traded gifts. Ronaldo was given a pair of UFC training gloves, and Velasquez received a Cristiano Ronaldo shirt from Real Madrid with a note that read, “To my friend Velasquez, with friendship.”

Queen Of Sports 101: KO

May 2nd, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in MMA,Sports 101 | 4 Comments

This weekend, at UFC 129 in Toronto, Randy Couture officially announced his retirement from the UFC after a brutal head kick by Lyoto Machida KO’d the 47-year old MMA legend. In boxing and in MMA, a KO or a knockout, signals the end of the match with whoever was KO’d being the loser. But how is a knockout defined and determined?

Well, a knockout is any action that leaves the other person unable to continue fighting quite simply. In addition, any sudden traumatic loss of consciousness caused by any sort of physical blow can be considered a KO.  Football and hockey players who loss consciousness from hits can be considered to have been  ”KO’d” but the term is generally reserved for combat sports. In boxing and kickboxing, if an opponent falls to the canvas and does not get up in 10 seconds for any number of reasons, their opponent is rewarded a KO victory. In mixed martial arts, if the person has obviously lost consciousness and does not make an effort to immediately defend themselves, they are considered to have been knocked out.

Along with KOs, there are also TKOS (technical knock outs) which result when a referee, physician, fighter, or fighter’s cornermen call a stoppage to a fight after it is decided they can not safely continue to fight. Sometimes a hit can cause a cut to become so bad, after doctor’s examine it, they decide the fighter can not safely continue to fight and call a stop to the fight. It can also be the case that a fighter is subjected to so many hits and is placed in such a position they can not defend themselves, so a referee will call a stop to the fight due to strikes.

Check out the head kick by Lyoto Machida (not for the faint of heart):

UFC 129 Preview: Georges St-Pierre Fights Jake Shields To Defend Title

April 27th, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in MMA | 1 Comment

This Saturday in Toronto, Canada, UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will be defending his title against Jake Shields. The sold-out event  is expected to be the most-attended UFC event ever. The fight will be Canadian powerhouse Georges St-Pierre’s sixth welterweight title defense. St-Pierre is widely considered to be the #1 or #2 best pound for pound fighter, and has a long list of awards, championships, and accomplishments under his belt. His opponent, Jake Shields, trains with the Cesar Gracie camp in Northern California that is sometimes considered the “bad boy” camp with fighters like Nick Diaz and Gilbert Melendez as members. The fighters from the Cesar Gracie team were involved in a post-fight brawl last year with Jason “Mayhem” Miller of MTV’s Bully Beatdown, following one of Shields’ victories in the cage.

Also on the card is the UFC’s first featherweight title bout since merging with WEC. Jose Aldo will defend his title against Mike Hominick. In his last appearance in the UFC before retiring, UFC legend Randy Couture will take on a worth opponent: former light heavyweight champion Lyoto Machida. Nate Diaz, brother of Nick Diaz and Cesar Gracie team member, will take on UFC newcomer Rory MacDonald, and eight other less notable fights are listed on the stacked card. Two preliminary fights will be aired on Spike at 5 pm PST, other prelims will be available to stream on UFC’s Facebook page, and the main events will air on Pay-per-view live at 6 pm PST.
