K-Swiss took a risk in their latest ad campaign which features Kenny Powers of the HBO series “Eastbound and Down”. The risk being using a fictional “athlete” to market their new Tubes shoes. Kenny Powers, (played by Danny McBride) plays a former professional baseball pitcher in the show who is forced to return to his hometown to teach elementary P.E. after retiring from baseball. The show is produced by Will Ferrell’s production company, and is centered around the sometimes raunchy but always humorous life of Kenny Powers. After Kanye West re-tweeted the above video featured on YouTube to his over 350,000 followers, the ads went viral. Featuring MMA fighter Urijah Faber, the Saints’ Jeremy Shockey, and Kenny Powers, the videos are comedic relief in comparison to the brand’s competition. Their demographic is the young male consumer, and between the creative advertising and reasonable price point of $75, we foresee success for the Tubes.

Nike Women Glorifies Big Butts In New Ad

July 26th, 2010 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Fashion,Misc | 2 Comments

Back in 2005, Nike did a series of ads that focused on different parts of a woman’s body that women complain about: shoulders, knees, butt, abs, thighs and hips. This ad campaign came around the same time Dove released its powerful campaign glorifying less than perfect woman’s bodies. Now, Nike has re-done the ad, taking the same copy from their “butt” ad, and using a picture of a whole woman’s body instead of just her butt. This is a smart marketing campaign, albeit uncreative, with the popularity of “big butts” and obtaining one on the rise. Kim Kardashian flaunts hers in Herve Leger dresses all over TV, Reebok released the EasyTone running shoe which promises to tone the butt, underwear with a padded rear are on the rise, and publications like the NY Daily News feature headlines in their fashion section that read “Rearing to go! Big butts are summer 2010′s hottest trend”.

Unlike back in 2005 when ads featuring full-bodied women were not commonplace, for them to re-release this ad now makes it less powerful. Nike is trying to cash in on the success Reebok and Sketchers has had in selling shoes that will supposedly make your butt bigger. Now more than ever it seems women want the big butt look, and this re-released ad is less powerful than it could ever be. Not all women who work out are going to obtain a big butt, and focusing on one body part is exactly what women should not be doing to create a positive self-image. We are all different, and whether we have a big butt or not, we are still capable of being strong, fit women.

What are your thoughts on the ad?

Open Letter From Chili’s President To Fans In Response To The Decision

July 19th, 2010 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Basketball,Misc | 2 Comments

Chili’s President, Wyman Roberts posted an open letter to his fans on the company’s Facebook page, in response to The Decision made by Steve Carrell which aired during the ESPYs. In it, he guaranteed, (in all caps) “that Chili’s menu items will be bolder and tastier than those of the self-titled ‘Steakhouse King’.” And, he told Outback they could “take that to the smoker.”  The letter starts off by saying the decision was announced in a “self-promotional, national TV three-minute special…unlike anything ever ‘witnessed’ in the history of casual dining and probably the history of entertainment.”

Things are really heating up between the two restaurants. We wonder if the commissioner of casual dining restaurants will fine the Chili’s President for his harsh words. Check out the full letter here.

Kobayashi Can Still Compete In Eating Challenges

July 6th, 2010 | Posted by Queen of Sports in Crime,Misc | 1 Comment

Major League Eating (MLE – the organization who puts on Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest) says that Takeru Kobayashi will not be banned from participating in future eating competitions despite his arrest this past weekend.

Kobayashi was detained after he stormed the stage at Nathan’s Famous 4th of Hot Dog Eating Contest after Joey Chestnut won the title.

MLE called Kobayashi’s actions “inappropriate and unfortunate” but according to the rep, “[Kobayashi] is a great champ. Nathan’s Famous actually tried to get him to come to the event originally.  There was a lot of back and forth negotiating but they couldn’t resolve it in time of the event.”

This whole story just makes us laugh. Too funny.

Drama At Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest!

July 5th, 2010 | Posted by Queen of Sports in Food,Misc | 4 Comments

Defending champion Joey Chestnut walked away with the title at the biggest food eating competition, Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest. Chestnut won his fourth consecutive title by downing 54 hot dogs in 10 minutes. The grand prize? $20,000 and the winner’s mustard yellow belt.

Despite winning, Chestnut was disappointed that he didn’t exceed his personal best from last year, 68 hot dogs.

But after the competition is when the drama began when Japanese eating champion Takeru Kobayashi rushed the stage. Kobayashi who did not compete in the competition because he is in the middle of a contract dispute with Major League Eating (yes, apparently this is a real organization).

Subsequently, Kobayashi was arrested and spent last night in jail. He was freed on Monday morning but may still face charges.

“I went as a spectator to cheer on my buddies that I used to eat with,” Kobayashi told reporters after his release. “Everyone in the crowd kept chanting ‘let him eat, let him eat.’ So I jumped onto the stage to prove that I am still the champ, but I was arrested.”

Michael Vick and Al Davis Top List Of Most Disliked People In Sports

June 23rd, 2010 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Baseball,Basketball,Football,Golf,Misc | 1 Comment

Forbes gathered information on the 10 most disliked people in sports, with Michael Vick topping the list. Michael Vick’s animal cruelty case made the public aware of what type of guy he is. The issue of animal cruelty clearly touches a nerve with the general public, seeing as he topped the list the last two years in a row. Next in line was Raider’s owner Al Davis, followed by Ben Roethlisberger. He was accused of sexual assault and portrayed as more of a frat boy than a respectable athlete. Some fans also think he hurt the Steelers’ chance at winning in 2010. And of course, new to the list this year was Tiger Woods and his womanizing ways.  Also on the list: Jerry Jones, Mark McGwire, Terrell Owen, Alex Rodriguez, Allen Iversen, and Gilbert Arenas.
