March 14th, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Boxing,Football | 1 Comment

While other NFL players have talked about considering a career in boxing following retirement from the NFL or during the lockout, Baltimore Ravens restricted free agent Tom Zbikowski one-upped them all by stepping into the ring this weekend and actually going for it. He not only stepped into the ring in Las Vegas, he also won with a first-round TKO and earned $50,000. Bob Arum, chairman of one of boxing’s biggest promotions companys, Top Rank, who promoted the fight, said another Zbikowski match is in the works later this month in Atlantic City, and late in April in Dallas. Zbikowski hadn’t fought in a ring since 2006 when he made his pro boxing debut while playing for Notre Dame.

Mike Tyson Comes Under Fire From PETA For New Animal Planet Show

March 9th, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Boxing,TV | No Comments

We told you awhile back about Mike Tyson‘s show about his hobby, pigeon racing, debuting on Planet Animal. Well, PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) have spoken out about their disapproval of the subject, saying it is cruel. Lisa Lange of PETA claims that 60% of pigeons who take part in races never return, with races as long as 600 miles. Often pigeons become the victims of birds of prey or sheer exhaustion. “These animals are not racing because they enjoy it,” she told theĀ Las Vegas Review-Journal. “It’s out of desperation that they make it back.”

Tyson, who has been a vegan for two years now and says a pigeon was the first thing he ever loved, has not commented on PETA’s protests.

Famous Athletes Who Are Vegetarians (And Vegans)

February 23rd, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Baseball,Basketball,Boxing,Football,Olympics,Tennis | 1 Comment

While athletes are probably more likely to be seen eating a steak than a salad, we found some athletes that keep it omnivorous. The Orange County Register compiled a list of athletes who are vegetarians, and some of them may surprise you.

First up, we have Atlanta Falcons tight end Tony Gonzalez. At approximately 243 lbs, he is very conscious about keeping a balanced diet. His vegetarian diet was spurred by an onset of Bell’s Palsy in 2007 which had him experimenting with a vegan diet that transformed to a mostly vegetarian diet. (Some sources say he very occasionally eats meat.) He co-authored a book called The All-Pro Diet and co-founded All-Pro Science which provides a line of protein shakes, vitamins, and supplements that focus on a balanced diet from all-natural sources.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa also belongs to the vegetarian set. While he is more known for his position as manager than pro ball player, he nonetheless maintains an active lifestyle. His vegetarianism comes from a love for animals. He and his wife are the founders of Tony La Russa’s Animal Rescue Foundation.

Sportscaster and basketball hall of famer Bill Walton is a vegetarian. We’re not sure about his vegetarian background, but it makes sense because he is a known “Deadhead” and was a political activist in the 60′s.

Tennis player Martina Navratilova is not your average athlete by many means. Aside from her involvement in the world of sports, she is also very involved in various activism causes including animal rights. Billie Jean King is also a vegetarian.

Nine time Olympic gold medal winning track and field star Carl Lewis is a vegan. He stands by the belief that sticking to a vegan diet can improve athletic performance.

Basketball hall of famer Robert Parish who used to play for the Boston Celtics is a vegetarian. Three of the five franchises John Salley played for won Championships. The basketball great is a vegan and strong supporter of PETA.

Former heavyweight boxer Mike Tyson is a vegetarian, and Hall of Fame former New York Jets quarterback Joe Namath is also. At 270 pounds, Milwaukee Brewers first baseman Prince Fielder doesn’t eat meat either.
