Happy Birthday Derrick Rose!

October 4th, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Basketball,Birthday | 2 Comments

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose turns 23 years old today.

The youngest player in NBA history to win the MVP award, Rose has made a name for himself not only in the NBA but in the history of the Chicago Bulls. He was the first Bull to cover Sports Illustrated since Michael Jordan, and the first Bull to make the All-Star team since Jordan. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2008, and hasn’t slowed down a bit since.

Hopefully the lockout will end soon so we can see more action from this young star!

Happy birthday Derrick Rose!

Happy Birthday Joe Namath!

May 31st, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Birthday,Football | No Comments

Happy birthday to “Broadway Joe” Namath who turns 68 today. Namath, who spent all but one year of his NFL/AFL career playing for the New York Jets, is a legend in the sport of football and an icon in the NFL’s history. Namath notably guaranteed the media that his  AFL Jets would beat the NFL’s Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III in 1969, then made good on his word. The win was a first for any AFL team and helped seal the deal for the NFL/AFL merger.

Namath’s “Broadway Joe” nickname stems from his on-field and off-field antics including wearing fur coats on the sidelines, and appearing in many television advertisements including one for Noxzema that also starred a then unknown Farrah Fawcett. Following his football career that ended after part of one season with the Los Angeles Rams, Namath acted in several movies and guest-starred on several television shows.

Namath was inducted into the football Hall of Fame in 1985 after his last and final retirement from football in 1977. He retired after playing 140 games, in which he threw 173 touchdowns.

Happy Birthday Willie Mays!

May 6th, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Baseball,Birthday | No Comments

Baseball hall of fame legend Willie Mays turns 80 years old today. The “Say Hey Kid” accomplished a lot during his days playing for the New York and San Francisco Giants before playing with the New York Mets for his final year in the MLB. Here’s a rundown of just a few reasons why he is a true legend:

  • He made 24 appearances in the All-Star Game and, as Ted Williams said, “They invented the All-Star game for Willie Mays.”
  • He ended his career with 660 home runs, which is currently the fourth all-time record.
  • He is the only MLB player to have hit a home run in every inning from the 1st through the 16th.
  • He is a 12-time Golden Glove Award winner.

Mays started his professional career playing in the Negro leagues before he was signed to the New York Giants’ minor league team in 1950. In 1951, he was sent to the major leagues where he won NL Rookie of the Year. Every year on May 24, San Francisco celebrates Willie Mays Day. He has been inducted into the California Hall of Fame, received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from San Francisco State University, and last year was inducted into the African-American Ethnic Sports Hall of Fame. His list of accomplishments and contributions to the sport of baseball are seemingly never-ending.

Happy birthday Willie Mays!

Happy Birthday Isiah Thomas!

April 29th, 2011 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Basketball,Birthday | No Comments

Isiah Thomas was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History during the NBA’s 50th anniversary and tomorrow Thomas will turn 50 himself. The retired basketball player who currently coaches the FIU Golden Panthers has had a very involved career in basketball. He played for the Pistons during the “bad boys” era, and led the team to a couple NBA Championship titles. He served as an executive with the Toronto Raptors for awhile, was a television commentator, and head coach of the Indiana Pacers and New  York Knicks.

He made his fair share of mistakes along the way. He owned and started the CBA, Continental Basketball Association, for a couple years before NBA commissioner David Stern created the D-League after which the CBA went into bankruptcy and folded. He was also involved in a sexual harassment lawsuit which became one of the largest judgements of its kind in history. His list of achievements, awards, and career highlights (including receiving the J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award in 1987) make him a legend in the sport regardless.
