Sports Date of the Week

April 30th, 2010 | Posted by Leah Hollar in Boxing,Sports Date of the Week | 3 Comments

It’s a well known fact that most men love boxing. Why not surprise the man in your life (or the man you want to be in your life!) with a date he’ll love? HBO pay-per-view is offering a match-up of two of the best boxers out there right now. Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr., six-time World Champion, is boxing Shane “Sugar” Mosley, the current WBA welterweight champion in Las Vegas. With the two being considered two of the top three boxers regardless of weight, (Manny Pacquiao is in the mix, too.) the match-up has generated a lot of hype for not being a title bout.

The fight is scheduled to air at 6 p.m. PT, and you can either stay in to watch it, or head out to one of the 250 movie theaters across the nation that are showing the fight.

Does Nike Support Athletes Who Disrespect Women?

A New York Times opinion writer had some very interesting points regarding Nike’s support of athletes who have “treat women like garbage.”

The writer, Timothy Egan questions how Nike is able to stand by athletes like Ben Roethlisberger, Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant who have all experienced controversy with women.

The only athlete to be dropped by the shoe giant was former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who plead guilty to dog fighting. Nike’s statement regarding the Vick situation, “We consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and unacceptable.”

Egan questions “But cruelty to women is O.K. I don’t know how else to read the company’s inconsistent stand.”

The writer does point out that Nike has been very supportive of female athletes, especially female runners and soccer players but thinks that ultimately Nike is sending this message, “It’s O.K. for a buffoon of a man to disrespect women, so long as he continues to throw a football well.”
